R. Eric Davis
contemporary art
I began making art within the structured approach of photography, seeking to capture a particular gaze and interpretation within the physical and intellectual frame of a photograph. However, over time, I wanted to depict a more complete moment and explore the concept of the "whole" rather than a fragment. This led me to move away from photography and explore other mediums such as gouache, watercolor, and acrylic on wood, paper, and panels.
The shift towards a more open and free approach in my work shows a willingness to break out of my initial formalistic notions and embrace a wider range of possibilities. Concerning scale, I can paint large works, yet find the intimacy of smaller works to be just as impactful and fulfilling as encountering larger-scale works. I know everything in a painting or drawing has to work without being subverted by the grandeur of size. The versatility and accessibility of small works allow them to fit into any space, providing a unique and surprising encounter for viewers.
Overall, I believe my work reflects a willingness to explore and challenge my own perceptions, seeking new ways to express ideas and connect with viewers. By embracing different mediums and scales, I have created a diverse body of work that showcases my artistic growth and creative evolution.
